2007 Ford Fusion Review

Handling:
The Ford Fusion handles quite well and was a refreshing change from many Ford sedansI have tested over the years. The rack and pinion steering was tight and gave good feel on curves. The car feels a little heavy when cornering which is comforting.  The all wheel drive is a real plus in the snow and should be a big selling point in the north. The ride was a little rough feeling and slightly noisier than other cars tested in its class. I give overall handling a score of 8 out of 10.

Fuel Consumption:
The Fusion V6 gets 29 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. A smaller car like this one should do better. Ford has a problem with car’s that favor performance over fuel consumption. If you ask 10 people on the street which they prefer most will say they would rather have a car that gets good mileage.  They do have a manual that does slightly better but they simply need to do better. The four speed does not improve mileage appreciably. We give fuel consumption a score of 6 out of 10.

Style and Aesthetics:
The Ford Fusion is a looker. It reminds me of a German design with a boxy back end and aerodynamic front end.  It is not boring which is a good thing. So many cars on the market today look bland and boring. The Fusion stands out.  All in all I like the look of the car and give it a 7.5 out of 10.

Interior:
The interior again seems to remind me of some European cars on the market today (wich is a good thing) The controls are laid out well, the seats are comfortable and supportive and the tilt steering wheel is good. The interior I tested was two tone and very attractive. This is a bif improvement for Ford and bodes well for the success of this car. The trunk is good sized and has a flat floor and wide trunk opening.  I give the interior a 7.5 out of 8.

Conclusion:
Overall this is a good offering by Ford. It comes close to contending with some of the other leading Japanese cars in this category but it remains to be seen whether the car will hold up 5 years out with Ford’s somewhat spotty quality of the recent past. I like the car and feel it is an excellent choice among midsize sedans and should not be overlooked. I would give it a heartier recommendation if the car was more fuel efficient.
