We recently stayed at the Westin St. John and had a really nice stay. The island is incredible and the Hotel is a good place from which to explore.
Location:
The Hotel is located about 2 miles from the main town called Cruz Bay and there is not much at all around that you can easily walk to other than a small strip mall that has a convenience store. We found the location fine with a rental Jeep but without transportation it is a little boring.
The Beach:
The Hotel is located in the edge of a cove with a man made beach that is fine but compared to the world class beaches on the other side of the island it just doesn't compare. I am sure some people don't leave the Hotel property which would be a travesty.
The Room:
We were upgraded on our stay because of Platinum status to a lower level room with a nice patio that was close to the pool and the beach. I highly recommend you get a room at the beach level instead of up the road and across the street. Those rooms up above were too far to walk in order to get to the beach and main pool. They do offer a shuttle but it is a hassle according to several people that I spoke to. The decor was somewhat dated and the room needed a little work. Nothing that detracted that much from our stay but considering the rates we expected a bit nicer room. The maid service was god and we had no troubles.
Dining: We did not go to the main restaurant but did try the beach front restaurant a couple times for breakfast and it was fine. They also have a nice convenience store that sells sandwiches at more reasonable rates that we liked.
Transportation: Getting to St John is more difficult than many other islands in that you can’t fly there. You have to fly into St Thomas and then take a ferry or the Westin shuttle. We chose to do the latter and it was expensive but very convenient. The shuttle drops you right on the beach of the property and they are waiting there to whisk you to your room.
Bottom Line:
We had a great vacation here and would certainly go again. The hotel has a big pool and there were lots of kids there during our stay so be warned
